Dr. Audrey McElroy has been a faculty member with a research, teaching, and extension appointment in the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences at Virginia Tech since 1999. Her research is focused on intestinal responses to enteric pathogens, the host-pathogen interaction, and the ability to minimize the impact of these on growth and performance in commercial broilers and turkeys. Goals are to investigate intestinal mechanisms of immunity to pathogens and gut integrity and how they can be modulated by dietary/nutritional strategies or other means to improve intestinal response during a disease challenge in relation to its ability to function optimally for immune defense, digestion, absorption, secretion and transport. Recent research areas involve the influence of dietary phytate on intestinal integrity during a coccidiosis vaccination program, the influence of dietary calcium, phosphorus, and phytase on necrotic enteritis in broilers, and phytase super-dosing effects on broiler performance. Dr. McElroy also works with the commercial poultry industry on research and educational programs.
